Michael Le Soufflé and The
April Fool
Cock-a-doodle-do come and see
how a little disagreement over a day on the calendar changed history and
gave us one of the funniest holidays. Long ago, in a little French
town of Bakonneggs lived a grouchy old hog named Melon de Plume and a
happy-go-lucky rooster named Michael Le Soufflé.
“Someday I’ll get that pig to
laugh,” Michael said, but no matter what he tried, Melon wouldn’t even
give a little piggy-giggle. Why, that hog wouldn’t even smile.
Then the King of France
announced that New Year’s Day would henceforth be celebrated on January
1st, The piggy gave a hog jowl-howl. “April 1st
is New Years Day,” Mayor de Plume insisted. “I don’t care what the
King of France says.” But the King cared what Melon said. Year after
year Melon would shout “Happy New Year” on April 1st and
every time the King would have Melon punished by whacking him with
fish. It happened so often that folks began to shout “April Fish!” at
porky old Melon. But why did Melon insist on following the old calendar
and upsetting the king year after year?
On a day when
pigs flew for the first time, Michael Le Soufflé finally figured out
what Melon de Plume was cock-a-doodle-doing. Now you can too. Learn a
few French words, a wee bit of French history and discover Melon’s
secret. Michael Le Soufflé and the April Fool – it’s a
laugh!
